How to fix a
roof will largely depend on what type of roof is being discussed.
It should be noted that repairs are usually patches and should only
be carried out if a small area is to be worked on. Leave the larger
jobs to the professionals!
Know
where the problem is!
If at all possible try to get into the roof and find out where the
water is getting in. The idea is to track back the leak to its point
of origin.
Once you have established where the water is getting in you will
hold a better position when conversing with contractors.
Giving a contractor the exact place to work on goes a long in helping
them with the quoting process. It will remove the element of educated
guess work and will definitely bring the price down of the quote.
You may even know someone who will venture onto the roof to attempt
the repair!
Exposing
the problem area
Roof repairs should always happen from the outside and not from
the inside.
If there is a small hole you can try to patch it but be sure to
get to the exact area by moving what ever is in your way and then
putting it back again.
If that is not possible then try to divert the flow of water away
from the problem area.
Avoid pasting waterproofing materials OVER suspect problem areas.
This will most likely make things worse.
Always move what is in the way, expose the area to be worked on,
apply the product and then replace what was moved. The idea is that
you work UNDER and not on top. Working under ensures that water
follows a natural path along it course from your roof to the gutter.
The fewer obstructions (like a big patch of waterproofing) the better
Working under also hides your work so that it is not so easily noticeable.
