Torch-on membrane
is without a doubt one of the most durable and reliable waterproofing
systems on the market. But what makes it so great? If you compare
torch-on with your regular fibremesh membranes the torch-on is much
thicker and tougher. Torch-on waterproofing membrane has to be applied
with a gas burner by melting the membrane over the leaking area
whether it be a IBR roof sheet, parapet wall or balcony. In the
case of fibremesh like Geoflex a primer first needs to be applied
to the surface before the fibremesh is applied. Once the fibremesh
membrane is applied a Geoflex white paint is painted onto the membrane.
Uniflash is also a type of waterproofing membrane system. It come
in widths of 100mm, 150mm, 200mm and up to 600mm and looks like
flat strips of liquorice with a sticky side. The sticky side of
the uniflash is used to apply to the leaking area onto the Neoprimer.
The
primer used for uniflash is called Neoprimer. Uniflash is just a
temporary waterproofing solution and not as permanent as torch-on.
That's one of the reasons way it's also allot cheaper than torch-on.
A aluminious paint called Silvakote is applied onto the Uniflash
and
torch-on to make it heat reflectant and protect it from weathering
easily. If you want to paint the torch-on the same color as your
house or the area where you're going to be waterproofing you can
paint it with Acrylic ST. It's one of the only paints that sticks
to the
waterproofing membrane, is able to withstand expansion and contraction
and has excellent weatherability combined with stain blocking capability.
Once the torch-on waterproofing membrane has been applied you can
walk on it and even scratch it without damaging it. Torch-on or
Uni-torch as they also call it is a waterproofing membrane with
complex attributes. Torch-on contains Atactic Polypropylene. It
has a non-woven polyester core and a fiberglass mat and comes in
a 3mm and 4mm thickness. It's these attributes that makes it as
strong and durable as it is. Be sure to use a trained applicator
to apply the Unit-torch waterproofing system as there is a level
of skill needed
to do it. If you're going to spend some money on a more expensive
system make sure you use a contractor that knows how to work with
the product. No matter how great the product is if it's not applied
properly and water leaks in the superiority of the product will
be nullified.
In conclusion
Torch-on waterproofing systems is a great and long lasting solution
for leaking roofs so don't waste your money with temperary quick
fixes that needs regular attention. Do the job righ first time.
It's give you peace of mind and put extra money back into your pocket.
